So Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich update is coming to many of the Sony Xperia phones. Unfortunately, it’s not going to make it to the Xperia Play. During ROM testing developers found issues with the stability, especially when it came to gaming. Because of those issues they couldn’t release it as an official update. Sony from their official mobile blog:
In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.
If you really want the update you could always just root your phone and get a custom ROM from the development community. I’m sure Ice Cream Sandwich will work on the Xperia Play… Some things will probably just be buggy. Don’t worry though – The community is always at work to improve stability on their ROMS, and they get better week by week.
