Fighting game fans seem to be rather disgusted by Capcom’s Street Fighter x Tekken locked content on the disc, and their blood thirst for taking away your DLC milk money. But, there is a solution. Don’t buy the game. If you’re into gems and an odd battle system with Capcom characters, then you should play Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix OR pony up $60 and then some. Personally, I am not a big fan of how this once holy company has worked the market to exploit loyal gamers and I am sure that I am not alone.
So, instead of bitching about it why don’t we find better games to play with more value! Here’s a list of games made by Capcom and Namco that are more worth your time and money than what Street Fighter x Tekken has to offer. You can get these new or used for lesser or equal money and you won’t feel anger that you need to pay money for characters and costumes. I even listed a couple of bonus games at the end. In no particular order, let’s get this shit rollin’!
1. Street Fighter IV $10.99 new @ Amazon.
I know there are two other versions of this game and this is the first one. Don’t forget that SFIV, aka Vanilla, essentially revitalized the high fevered passion for fighting games in this era of consoles. No offense to Blazblue but Aksys can’t hold a candle to this series, esp in the sense of overall popularity. Not saying they aren’t great, deep fighters (cuz the series is), but not many have been able to tap into this market better than Capcom. We can thank SFIV for it.
Also, did you know what was included with this game? You start off with 4 completely new characters to the series on top of the 12 that filled up the original Street Fighter II Turbo roster. Then you were also able to unlock 9 more players through EARNING them by beating the game. You were also given survival, time trial, and mission modes to learn moves and master combos. This is where you were given more costume colors, taunts, game intros, art, and other random online titles for personal customization. Don’t forget that you had fully animated hand-drawn intros and endings for all 23 characters in the arcade mode.
SFIV brought in a completely new system that gave everyone new strategies and combo possibilities with Focus Attacks and Focus Attack Dash Cancels (FADC) that really expanded the genre’s depth once again. It seems like Capcom would step up everytime they released a Street Fighter game and they hit it out of the park for this series. The only downside was an iffy online format which was fixed, enhanced, improved, then re-enhanced with Super Street Fighter IV and SSFIV: Arcade Edition.
2. Tekken 6 $18 new @ gohastings.com.
Namco does not ever seem to let up with regards to the quality and quantity of content they want to give you in their games and Tekken 6 will not turn you off. Not only do you get a shitload of characters (both new and old), you get modes on top of modes. One the best things to do is play the Tekken Force mode that has existed since Tekken 3. This is where you take any of your favorite guys and beat the crap out of a story setting. I mean, if SFIV gives you an anime video to watch, Tekken 6 gives you a story to play. Does is make sense? Does it have to?
The game is definitely fun. Not only are you given a ton of characters to use, you can set-up any fighter with any style of dress and make your own costumes! Capcom wants to charge you with new character models, Namco gives the player a chance to design their own dudes. Not to mention, you can take them online and show them off as wailing away on some back-breaking combos.
