At the end of every year we look back to find ways to improve ourselves for the upcoming year. Sometimes we use specific events of the year as an excuse to hit the restart button to begin again, like the new year, and form resolutions to follow a track of improvement. I like to call it my “New Year’s Resolutions”, hopefully this phrase will catch on and everybody will use it until the end of time. So, considering this is a gaming website why don’t we make some promises from the perspective of a gamer.
Interested? Why the puck not.
I wrote this for my personal growth but possibly you will see me eye-to-eye for some of these resolutions of 2012. Shit, your head might be where mine is at or you’re already on some other level. Regardless, I feel this list could be more universal than I initially expected.
With that let’s get this train rolling.
1. I will give new technologies like the Wii U and Kinect 2 an honest chance at launch.
I remember many a year ago when the Wii was announced, I looked forward to playing it with some genuine excitement. The Wii was weird, clunky, and hardly accurate compared to my lovable controller. Also, the games weren’t too attractive and neither were the graphics compared to what the PS3 and XBox 360 had in store. I saw it as such a niche and gimmicky product that looked too conceptual for its own good.
The Wii could have been alright for a person that looks more at the old school roots of gaming than recent fads; but it turned out that the Wii became a system built more for kids and the ladies, though without trying to ignore the core group of players that grew up from the 8-bit and up days. Sadly, it was a failure to those that loved the old days of gaming. I am not saying it was a commercial failure, rather I say Nintendo was shooting for a new strategy in including a new set of gamers and essentially “resetting” their audience base for the future years to come. That audience didn’t include me.
On the other hand, the Kinect could not have turned me off any quicker. Ooooh, so you mean I get to talk to my video games instead of pressing up and down??? Yay. Not to mention the idea of having to calibrate the Kinect to different bodies and reducing interference to the background in order to play a game. And please tweet me when you know a game that’s worthy of the money and time on the Kinect for me. It is a pretty cool piece of tech but is there where I want gaming to go?
Damn it, I am giving it a try! The Wii U looks to be “figured out” so gamers that love their hardcore gaming and their Nintendo IPs will able to play them in style. We could see a renaissance from the biggest company in gaming very well this next year or so. The same goes for the Kinect 2 on Microsoft’s future console. I need to young up these old bones and learn some new tricks or else the best thing in gaming might get lost on me, ya know, having fun.
2. I will buy a PS3 and play some of the best games made on this reign of consoles.
For too long I would laugh at jokes and snidely comment on the Sony Playstation 3. One of my favorites is that the PS4 wouldn’t need backwards compatibility because the PS3 had no games. It’s short sighted yet forgivable because there weren’t a lot of games that was exclusive to PS3 that blew you out of the water. I think that perspective has changed on me now 2012 is here.
Without looking too far ahead, what the PS3 has, what the XBox 360 wishes for, are the God of War series (some say the real GoW), Uncharted series, certain Sony exclusives like older Final Fantasy games, Street Fighter Alpha 2 (those Sony bastards are greedy cuz I want that on my XBLA), Resistance series, and those Little Big World games. The next one on my radar is Twisted Metal. Damn son, now I feel the itch a little too strong…..plus I want to play Arcana Hearts. There are probably a bunch of other great games for the Playstation 3 but I wouldn’t know it because I have yet to explore Sony’s catalog.
Maybe one day I will vow to play games on my PC. Woah!
