In the latest issue of Game Informer (which features New Super Mario Bros U as the cover story) we got some very interesting new details about the game that will make fans, old and new, very happy.

  • The Ice Flower power up will return in the game. This is one of my favorite powers in any Mario game, so to see it back is very cool. I actually find it more useful than the traditional Fire Flower, because not only do you immobilize your enemy, but you can jump on top of them and go about your ways or you can pick them up and throw them! Just an overall great power up.
  •  There is a new feature in the game called Boost Mode, which is basically a speed run though the levels. Here’s the tricky part: when you are in Boost Mode, the levels automatically scroll to the right, so you better have some pretty darn good platforming skills and reflexes because it will not let up if you miss a jump or get caught in a corner.  No further details as to whether or not the mode will be unlocked as soon as you start the game or if you have to finish the story.
  • The World Map will be very reminiscent to the one in the classic Super Mario World on the SNES. You will be able to pan around the map to check out what is ahead. Each world will feature different paths to explore and will allow numerous ways to complete a world without fully exploring it.

Clearly New Super Mario Bros U had a few tricks up its sleeve in the features department. I was skeptical about another New Super Mario Bros game given that we are barely a month removed from New Super Mario Bros 2 on the 3DS. But not only are they offering new ways to play the game with the Gamepad & Boost Mode, they are going back to the well and re-establishing some great ideas from past games. I will certainly be waiting in anticipation this fall.
