According to a report by Bloomberg, cable companies such as Verizon, Comcast & Time Warner Cable could be testing with video game streaming technology as soon as early next year. Speaking to Bloomberg anonymously, the source states:
“Trials of cloud-gaming services are likely to start later this year so carriers can test and tweak the technology before wider deployments that may begin as early as 2013.”
It seems like if there was ever a time to try out this technology, it’s now. Even though most homes in the U.S don’t have Ethernet, there is enough of a margin of consumers that testing this kind of technology could be very profitable if they can make it work. As with the case of Onlive, there is always the inherent risk of pushing out technology that most video game companies don’t want to support because no one has successfully done it yet, but these are cable internet companies that already have a large install base to test it on. As with all rumors, this may not be true and never come to pass, but with Sony purchasing Gaikai and Microsoft implementing cloud technology to the Xbox 360, I would not completely dismiss it just yet.
